Both BMW and Mercedes-Benz EQ have introduced new electric sedans to their lineups, and just about every potential EV owner wants to understand how these two models measure up. After all, BMW and Mercedes-Benz have been rivals for decades—and we don’t see that changing anytime soon. Our in-depth BMW i4 vs. EQS comparison covers range, performance, luxury features, and more, so you can bring home an EV with everything you need.

2022 EQS vs. 2023 BMW i4: Range

Range is one of the most important factors to consider when purchasing an EV—and of course, it’s also one of the areas where EV manufacturers are competing most aggressively. With a much longer standard range, the EQS proves that BMW still has a long way to go:

  • EQS Range: Up to 350 miles as standard
  • BMW i4 Range: Up to 282 miles as standard

If you’re looking at upgrades, you should know that the EQS maintains its advantage as you move down the line:

  • The i4 can offer up to 301 miles of range with an upgrade, but it can never match the EQS mile for mile.
  • The EQS is offered in a 580 4MATIC® trim level with up to 340 miles of range. At the top of the lineup, the first-ever AMG® EQS offers a still impressive 277 miles of range.
  • The only i4 upgrade is the i4 M50. It offers 271 miles of range at maximum, and just 227 miles at minimum.

2022 EQS vs. 2023 BMW i4: Performance

Range is important—but we know that most luxury EV shoppers in Los Angeles and Pasadena won’t be satisfied with range alone. Here’s what you should know about the power offered by our two challengers:

  • With 329 hp and 335 hp, respectively, the EQS and the i4 offer near-equivalent amounts of horsepower as standard—but the base-level EQS has 100 more lb-ft of torque.
  • The EQS offers two powertrain upgrades. With 516 hp and 631 lb-ft of torque, the EQS 580 4MATIC® can easily go head-to-head against the i4 M50. The latter offers 536 hp and 586 lb-ft of torque.
  • If that was all there was to say, performance enthusiasts might feel comfortable with either model—but there’s more. A new AMG® EQS offers up to 649 horsepower and 700 lb-ft of torque, enough to take this model from 0 to 60 in a blistering 3.4 seconds.

2022 EQS vs. 2023 BMW i4: Luxury Features & Capacities

It’s important to consider every angle before you make a final decision, but the EQS wins out no matter what areas you consider in your EQS vs. BMW i4 comparison:

  • With a unique design, the EQS can offer between 22 and 63 cubic feet of cargo space. The i4, with its more traditional trunk, can store just 16.6 cubic feet.
  • If you want heating and ventilation for your front seats, stick with the EQS. Both features cost extra on the i4.
  • The EQS also comes standard with genuine leather upholstery that can please any Alhambra-area aesthete. The i4, for its part, includes synthetic perforated leather.
