The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the flagship sedan in the Mercedes-Benz lineup, and it’s every bit as powerful and luxurious as you’d expect for a model that can make that claim. Although fuel economy might not be the most important factor for those considering the S-Class, it’s important to note from the outset that this model is far from inefficient! In fact, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class mpg ratings reach as high as 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway—not bad at all for a full-size sedan with more than 400 horsepower as standard.
There’s a significant difference between the most impressive Mercedes-Benz S-Class gas mileage ratings and those you’ll encounter on the upper end of the lineup. Although you shouldn’t let that fact dissuade you from considering all your options, drivers who want to minimize their fuel consumption will ultimately favor the base model and its inline-6:
Looking for even better fuel economy in a new model? The EQS is an electric vehicle that’s just as luxurious as the S-Class sedan.
Even the standard S-Class engine provides more than enough power for Los Angeles and Pasadena drives, but that doesn’t mean you should have to settle. After all, the Mercedes-Benz S 580 4MATIC®® costs just $6,000 more than the entry-level model.
Moreover, although the Mercedes-Benz S 580 4MATIC®® and the Mercedes-Maybach S 580 4MATIC®® have similar specs, drivers who choose the S-Class can enjoy a major jump in power by stepping into the V12-powered S 680 sedan. See exactly what we mean:
The 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class mpg ratings are, on the whole, very similar to those we’ve seen for 2022. However, the 2021 S-Class was offered as a coupe, a convertible, or a sedan—whereas the 2022 model was only offered in a sedan configuration. The 2021 lineup also included an AMG® S 63 model instead of a Maybach S 680 configuration, and that means you won’t have access to a V12 if you step back into yesteryear.
The 2020 lineup differs from the 2021 and 2022 lineups in several ways. In the first place, this year was the last one to include a plug-in hybrid variant of the S-Class: the S 560e. With up to 64 MPGe, it’s a great choice for the efficiency-conscious driver in Arcadia or Alhambra. The 2020 lineup also includes two models with V12s: one from Maybach and another from AMG®.
